Polio immunization campaign kicks off across 21 provinces in Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has initiated the anti-polio vaccination campaign in 21 provinces of Afghanistan on Monday.

According to officials from the MoPH, the four-day campaign, aims to administer the anti-polio vaccine to 7.5 million children under the age of five.

“This campaign covers more than 200 districts and covers 7.5 million children,” said Abdul Qudus Baryalay, operational manager of the Polio Disease Control Center in the Ministry of Public Health.

In the first round of the anti-polio vaccine campaign for the current solar year, the MoPH aims to address the rise in polio cases.

According to 2023 statistics, Afghanistan has reported six cases of polio, compared to two cases recorded in 2022.

The campaign seeks to vaccinate children under the age of five to prevent the further spread of polio.

It should be noted that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries where polio has not yet completely disappeared.
