Taliban overrun key check posts in Logar’s Baraki Barak

PUL-I-ALAM (SW) – The Taliban have overran a key check post in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province, sources told Salam Watandar.

A credible source who did not want to be named in the report said that around 4 am on Saturday, the Lab Jar security checkpoint in Baraki Barak district fell into the hands of the Taliban and the soldiers surrendered to the group with their ammunition and weapons without any resistance.

The source added that the Taliban also carried out mass attacks on several security checkpoints in Mohammad Agha district of the province last night, causing heavy casualties on both sides. The source did not provide information on the number of casualties.

However, Gul Haidar Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Logar Police Command, told Salam Watandar that the Lab Jar security checkpoint has been moved from one area to another. Ahmadi denied the fall of the checkpoint.

After the brief truce on three-day Eid al-Fitr, insecurity and targeted killings have increased in the Pul-i-Alam, the capital of Logar province, and a number of its districts.

Meanwhile, Abbas Tavakuli, commander of the 217th Pamir Corps, has claimed that six Taliban, including the group’s shadow district governor, have been killed and seven others wounded in the clashes. Tavakuli added that the Taliban had fled the area after the arrival of reinforcements.

The commander of the 217th Pamir Corps confirmed that security forces have suffered casualties in the clashes; but did not provide details.
