Thousands of drug addicts in Uruzgan await treatment

TIRIN KUT CITY (SW) – In the only addiction treatment center for drug addicts in the Tirin kut city, center of Uruzgan province, about 25,000 drug addicts are waiting to undergo the treatment process. However, according to officials at this center, they face challenges in treating the addicts due to insufficient beds.

Officials say that in the past two years, they have been able to treat only 160 drug addicts.

Sulaiman Shah Mosleh, the head of the special addiction treatment center in Uruzgan, urges officials to increase the number of beds in this center and establish other centers for the better treatment of drug addicts.

Some residents of Uruzgan province also demand the Ministry of Public Health to promote the number of beds in the drug addiction treatment centers so that all drug addicts in this province can access treatment services.

Meanwhile, Mohammadullah Rohani, the head of Public Health Directorate in Uruzgan, says efforts are being made to increase specialized drug addiction treatment centers in the province. He adds that soon, the number of beds in the special drug addiction treatment center in the Tirin Kut city will also increase to 100.

According to Uruzgan officials, in the past years, after Helmand, the most opium poppy was cultivated in Uruzgan province, and for this reason, the number of drug addicts in this province is also high.
