Atmar inks roadmap for key regional rail project with Uzbekistan, Pakistan

 

Monitoring (SW) – Foreign minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar on Tuesday inked roadmap with Uzbekistan and Pakistan for the landmark rail project linking the three countries.

The signing ceremony for the multi-billion dollar project took place in Tashkent.

Atmar thanked the host Uzbekistan for playing its leadership role in pursuing this landmark regional project. “In a landmark event, signed a roadmap for construction of Mazar-Kabul-Peshawar railway, a joint project by Uzbekistan, Afghanistan & Pakistan to boost connectivity, contribute to increased trade, transit & eco coop & realize our shared vision to link Central & South Asia thru  Afghanistan”, he tweeted.

The proposed 573-km railway track is set to connect Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent via the Afghan capital Kabul with Pakistan’s northern Peshawar city.

Also on Tuesday, foreign minister led a high-level Afghan delegation to meet Uzbek Foreign Minister, Abdulaziz Kamilov, to discuss the development of bilateral relations, lasting regional peace, economic cooperation, and Afghanistan’s position as regional connector.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar conveyed the Afghanistan President’s good wishes and gratitude to Foreign Minister Kamilov for the strong support of the Uzbek government and the people of Uzbekistan for the peace process and the preservation of democratic achievements within the framework of the republic, said the foreign ministry.
