On the occasion of International Translation Day, the United Nations (UN) has highlighted the vital role language professionals play in promoting cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue, education and development.
In a post on X on Wednesday (Sept. 30), the UN emphasized the important role of language professionals in bringing nations together, promoting understanding and cooperation, contributing to development, and strengthening world peace and security.
The UN added that language professionals work across UN offices and regional commissions, translating and interpreting documents covering issues such as human rights, peace and security, and development.
UN documents are issued in the Organization’s six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
The UN General Assembly declared Sept. 30 as International Translation Day on May 24, 2017, through a resolution recognizing the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development.
