The Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) covering Afghanistan has announced that it has installed or repaired 275 hand pumps in Gulran district of Herat province.

In a post on X on Thursday (Oct. 22), the ICRC said the installation and repair of these pumps had improved access to clean and safe drinking water for 38,500 people.

The agency added that water shortages had forced many people to rely on unsafe water from irrigation canals, ditches, and pools left over from winter, exposing them to waterborne diseases.

Access to safe drinking water remains a major challenge in Afghanistan due to poor water supply systems and limited water resources.

International organizations and Afghan authorities are working to improve water supplies and expand access to clean drinking water.
