The United Nations has said that climate change threatens the lives and livelihoods of people in Afghanistan by reducing crop yields and increasing the frequency of natural disasters.
The organization shared a report on Sunday (August 2) stating that more than 200,000 people in Afghanistan are affected by the impacts of climate change each year.
According to the United Nations, from February to July 2025, dozens of people in Afghanistan were killed or injured by heavy rainfall and flash floods, which also destroyed homes, farmland, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
The United Nations emphasized that it has implemented climate adaptation projects in several provinces, including Kapisa, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Kabul, and Paktika, to help manage disaster risks in Afghanistan and respond to the needs of its people.
Afghanistan is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. The Islamic Emirate’s National Environmental Protection Agency previously said that Afghanistan needs $22 billion in funding, along with international support, to reduce the negative impacts of climate change.
