United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that humanity produces around 2.1 billion tonnes of waste each year, while air pollution alone causes approximately 8 million premature deaths.
In a post on X on Monday (April 27), the agency said that no ecosystem is spared from pollution and no living creature is unaffected.
It added that pollution remains the largest environmental cause of disease and premature death worldwide, impacting ecosystems and human health through contaminated food, water, and air.
The UNEP also emphasized that pollution is both controllable and preventable, noting that transitioning to cleaner industries and adopting circular economic approaches can significantly reduce pollution.
