Farmers in Laghman call for better management of Alishang and Alingar Rivers

Laghman is a province where most of its population earns their living through agriculture and natural resources. With its green mountains, natural forests, and flowing rivers, this province is considered one of Afghanistan’s most important agricultural and natural areas. Two major rivers in the province, Alishang and Alingar, are essential sources of life for the people.

Deforestation threatens Badghis’ pistachio trees

“We see in the ‘Pista liq’ of Badghis trees are being cut” says Abdul Khaliq, a local resident. “Every citizen must feel responsible. Even a single leaf is part of our shared wealth.” He adds, “The government should first raise awareness among the people. But if the violations continue, there must be legal punishment.”

Rising deforestation threatens Badakhshan’s nature

Sabor Noori, a resident of Badakhshan, says that deforestation has surged in recent months, causing severe floods, soil erosion, and spreading desert-like conditions in parts of the province. He added, “Areas that used to be green and full of forests—which also helped keep floods in check, or as we Badakhshanis call it, reduced the ‘rocky water’—have sadly been destroyed. Beautiful plains and meadows are now turned into rocky, unusable land, and this makes floods even more damaging for the people.”
