Daikundi residents faced with acute shortage of ENT, eye specialists

NILLI CITY (SW) – Among other miseries and shortcomings, residents of Daikundi province are faced with an acute shortage of ear, nose and throat doctors as well as eye specialists.

A number of Daikundi residents complain about the lack of treatment facilities and specialist staff in the ear, nose and throat departments as well as eye specialists in the province, saying that this problem has forced patients to go to other provinces for the treatment.

Sarwar Salehi, a resident of Daikundi, says that the lack of access to medical facilities, especially the specialist staff in the ENT departments, has caused patients to go to Kabul or other provinces for treatment.

He adds: “There is no physician in Daikundi for the ear, nose and throat or eye departments, there is no equipment that less specialized physicians can treat patients with. Unfortunately, few patients who have ear, nose and throat or eye diseases have to travel long and difficult roads to go to other provinces.”

This resident of Daikundi added that some patients cannot go to other provinces for the treatment due to economic incapacity.

Mujtaba, another resident of Daikundi, says that the lack of access to treatment facilities is a serious problem and the aid institutions as well as the Islamic Emirate should take steps to solve this problem. He adds: “Our request is that they solve this problem of the people soon and hire doctors specializing in ear, nose and throat as well as eye departments in the provincial hospital of this province because people go to other provinces when they are faced with the disease.”

On the other hand, the officials in the Department of Public Health of Daikundi confirm the absence of doctors in the eye, ear and throat departments and say that they are trying to solve this problem.

Mohammad Ghani Samim, Head of Daikundi Public Health, says the public hospitals are facing the lack of specialist staff in bone, eye, ear, nose and throat departments due to their small size and capacity.

“We do not have specialists in the two departments of eyes, ear, nose and throat that is why we do not have specialists from other provinces, and even if they do, the cost is high, which the hospitals cannot afford. We are trying to upgrade the provincial hospital into 250 beds to solve all the problems,” He added.

While the residents of Daikundi complain about the lack of access to medical facilities, especially specialist staff, the Ministry of Public Health has repeatedly said that citizens’ access to medical services has improved compared to the past.
