As West visits India, IE demands attention for Afghanistan’s reconstruction

KABUL (SW) – Thomas West, the Special Representative of the United States for Afghanistan, has stated that during his visit to India, he discussed on adopting an “unified diplomatic approach” with Indian officials to support collective interests related to Afghanistan.

Held a meeting with Mohan Kumar, the Deputy Foreign Minister of the country, and JP Singh, the head of the Afghanistan and Pakistan division at this ministry, Thomas West wrote on X, saying that he also conversed with Indian officials about the “path forward” for Afghanistan and the country’s needs for the current year.

“India continues to provide humanitarian aid and medicines to Afghans, and we discussed about 2024. We also exchanged views on fostering a united diplomatic engagement in support of collective interests.”

West described his discussions with Indian officials on Afghanistan as “valuable”.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Emirate authorities say that in meetings and discussions among countries regarding Afghanistan, the progress of this government within Afghanistan must be taken into account.

Hamdullah Fetrat, the deputy spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, tells Salam Watandar: “Thom West’s meetings with regional countries mostly pertain to the relations between the United States and these countries. However, if the issue of Afghanistan is included in the agenda, our desire from all sides is that the progress in Afghanistan should be considered, and security and stability here should be supported.”

Some experts believe that currently, the United States is striving to engage other countries in discussions surrounding Afghanistan’s issues and make decisions regarding this country based on that.

Wais Naseri, expert on political issues, says: “The efforts of the special representative of the United States for Afghanistan revolve around advocating for a unified approach among regional countries and the international community towards the current Afghanistan’s ruling officials.”

Wali Forozan, a political analysts, shares his view, saying that “there has been a series of coordination between India and the United States regarding Afghanistan, and they were in agreement on many fronts. However, recent meetings between India and the Taliban seem to have unsettled the United States.”

Thomas West had previously announced plans to visit India and the United Arab Emirates for discussions with US partners.
