MEW urges international collaboration to tackle drought, advancing dam construction projects

KABUL (SW) – Officials from the Ministry of Energy and Water emphasize the crucial need for international cooperation and active involvement of organizations to combat drought in the next solar year and successfully execute major dam construction projects.

Mutiullah Abed, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Water, confirming the continuation of the drought crisis in 1403, says that the ministry has built one small water dam in each district in addition to building 38 large water dams to combat the drought crisis.

“This year and next year, the ministry has considered 140 water reservoirs worth 420 million Afghanis, 113 dams have been put into operation, these dams are very useful to fight drought, to feed the water resources,” said Abed.

Meanwhile, a number of farmers voice concern about the significant decrease in snow and rainfall, anticipating a decline in their yields for the upcoming year, similar to the current year.

Mohammad Ewaz, a farmer in Kandahar, expresses his worry, stating, “Until now, we have not experienced such a severe drought; there was no rain last year. Despite our efforts in planting, the crops are affected by drought, yielding poor results. Additionally, the water levels have decreased, making it challenging for solar machines to efficiently raise water.”

Saber, another farmer in Kandahar, also says: “We demand the government to build water reservoirs to solve the problem. This drought is a loss to the people.”

Mohammad Dawood Shirzad, an environmental expert, emphasizes the importance of water management and the construction of reservoirs. He suggests that the government should focus on building dams as they provide a foundation for the gradual storage of rainwater, preventing the depletion of underground water levels.

On Friday, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) wrote on social media platform X that it continues to build dams with the cooperation of companies and the people to manage the water shortage crisis.
