water crisis compels families to abandon their homes in Atghar district of Zabul

ZABUL (SW) – A number of residents of Atghar district of Zabul say that besides lacking water for the crops, they also face challenges due to the unavailability of drinking water.

Zabul, in the south of Afghanistan, is a province where climate changes and drought has damaged agriculture lands and livestock in this province the most.

Haji Malek and Mohammad Khan, Atghar district residents, express their concern on ongoing difficulty in accessing drinking water, saying that several families in the district have been compelled to abandon their homes, with this trend persisting.

Haji Malek says: “We do not have access to drinking water and there are villages and families who have moved to other villages due to lack of access to drinking water.”

Mohammad Khan also adds: “We do not have access to food and clean water. We have three deep wells that have dried up and their drilling has not been successful. We ask the government to build water dams to provide drinking water to the people.”

However, the local authorities in Zabul say that they are trying to provide drinking water to the residents of Atghar district and other areas of this province.

Abdulkarim Zulfiqar, the head of the Tarnak marine area in Zabul, says: “We assure all the residents that we will share this issue with the ministry and partner institutions. This is not the only district of Atghar which its residents do not have access to drinking water; However, drinking water is scarce in other regions and districts as well.”

It is noteworthy that residents in some other provinces also face similar problems, and the drought this year has prompted similar complaints.
