Sportsmen mobilise to rehabilitate drug addicts

FEROZ KOH (SW) – A number of athletes have started a public awareness campaign for the past two weeks in order to rehabilitate drug addicts.

Boxing player Abdul Qasim Ferdowsi and a number of players from different sports went to the bank of the Harirod river in Ferozkoh city, the center of Ghor, where drug addicts are using drugs, in order to turn them away from drug use. He added that this public awareness campaign has been created for the purpose of recovering drug addicts, and according to him, addicts should be informed about the dangers of drug addiction.

“They will be a burden on the shoulders of the society and everyone, the government and charitable organizations that are able to help, should help and make it possible for them to get rid of this problem,” he said.

According to Ferdowsi, they are trying to take the drug addicts to the hospital and return them to the community and their family as a healthy person.

At the same time, a number of drug addicts say that they started using drugs during poverty and immigrating to Iran.

Moladad, who is addicted to drugs, wants other young people to stay away from drugs and start exercising. “Instead of smoking, turn to sports. You see, we are poor, we are very poor, we are away from our wives and children.”

The officials of the 20-bed drug addiction treatment hospital in Ghor say that such public awareness campaigns help to encourage addicts to stop using drugs and visit health centers for treatment.

Dr. Mohammad Gul Ahmadi of the drug addiction treatment hospital in Ghor said: “We are very happy with this campaign and all people should know and come and get their treatment. Now there are 15 people in the hospital and we are always treating patients.”

Actors and health professionals in Ghor also say that despite the fact that drugs harm a person’s health, mental and spiritual condition, they also have bad social and economic consequences.
