Transporters directed not to carry goods on top of vehicles

KABUL (SW) – Officials of the Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation have asked the drivers and ground transportation companies to refrain from transferring cargo on the roof of passenger vehicles.

Imamuddin Ahmadi, the spokesman of this ministry, told Salam Watandar that this decision was taken in order to implement transportation laws and ensure the safety of passengers. He says: “According to the rules, the technical directorate of the Ministry of Transportation and Aviation has advised that passenger cars are for transporting passengers and cannot carry cargo.”

On the other hand, officials of a number of ground transportation companies say that they will implement this solution.

Rahimullah, the representative of “Hasarak” ground transportation company, emphasized that after this, no load will be transferred on the roof of passenger cars of this company. He adds: “We only carry a small amount of passenger goods in the toolbox, and we don’t have enough space to carry that load on the roof.”

Mukhtar, the representative of “Novi Khanj” ground transportation company, says that this company will not allow the load to be transferred on the roof of its passenger cars. He adds: “The passenger vehicles do not have a roof that can carry a high load. These vehicles are for passenger transport and for now there are road problems. The cars go through Khavak and there is no possibility for them to lift the load.”

However, Nowruz, a road traffic police officer, says that transferring cargo on the roof of passenger cars causes traffic incidents on the roads. He says: “The small cars, which transports passengers is only allowed to carry only its goods and has no right to load potatoes, corn or wheat because the car’s weight increases, car brakes don’t work and traffic accidents occur.”

Officials of the Ministry of Transportation and Civil Aviation added that by checking and controlling the passenger cars inside Kabul city, they have also removed the extra and non-standard checkpoints elsewhere.
