Foreign ministers of the US, Qatar discuss Afghanistan

MONITORING (SW) – The foreign ministers of the US and Qatar have met in Germany and discussed the situation in Afghanistan, said an official statement.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met in Munich with Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, according to the State Department.

“The Secretary thanked the Foreign Minister for Qatar’s generosity and continued willingness to partner in our efforts to assist the people of Afghanistan”, it said, adding it said Secretary Blinken and the Foreign Minister discussed tensions in Ukraine and the pressing need for Russia to deescalate the situation.

“Of course, the situation in Ukraine is keeping you busy and we commend all the diplomatic talks that you are taking,” said Sheikh Mohammed on Friday before their meeting in Germany on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

Secretary Blinken, later said the meeting was “productive”, where he renewed his appreciation for Qatar and the US’ strategic ties.

Meanwhile, US Special Envoy Rina Amiri has said that the Muslim World needs to be at the forefront of holding the Taliban accountable to respect human rights and deliver on its commitment to enable women and girls, in all their diversity, to return to school, work & public & political life.

“Had fruitful discussions with the @isdb_group Welcomed progress towards the establishment of the Afghanistan Trust Fund & efforts to garner donor support from @OIC_OCI members & other allies to address the devastating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan”, she said in a series of tweets from Jeddah.
