PUL-E-ALAM (SW) – A massive truck bombing has killed and injured over 100 people in Logar province’s capital Pul-e-Alam last evening, said officials.

Spokesman for the Logar police command Gul Haydar Ahmedi said the bombing took place near a guest house belonging to the Azara district residents where students preparing for the university entrance tests were residing. He confirmed at least 21 people lost their lives and 91 other got injured in this attack.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the devastating assault.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani dubbed this attack as a ‘crime against humanity’ by the Taliban. “The Taliban are accountable to Allah Almighty and to the people of Afghanistan for this massacre of the Muslim people of Afghanistan,” Ghani said.

According to the President, the Taliban, by continuing their illegitimate war and violence against the people, have once again shown that they not only have no will to resolve the current crisis peacefully and fundamentally, rather, by complicating the situation, they are wasting the opportunity provided for peace. He also instructed security forces not to ignore the Taliban’s atrocities.

Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the High Council of National Reconciliation, also condemned the attack. In a message, Abdullah blamed the attack on “enemies of Islam and the homeland” and said that while efforts for peace were taking place at the national and international levels and had raised hopes for peace, such “cowardly attacks” were challenging the peace process.

The head of the HCNR has called on the Taliban to lay down arms for the sake of Ramadan and to show goodwill for peace and to refrain from violence so that such crimes do not take place.

The Turkish embassy in Kabul also issued a statement strongly condemning the bombing in Logar and stressing that escalating violence would not help lasting peace talks.

The European Union has also called the Logar bombing a catastrophe for all of Afghanistan. The union has stressed that senseless violence must stop.
