The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Afghanistan has said that millions of people in the country still lack reliable access to safe drinking water.
In a post on X on Tuesday (July 28), the agency stated that water is life and called for the protection of these vital resources.
According to UN-Habitat, smart urban planning and effective water and waste management can help protect water resources, improve sanitation, and build healthier communities.
Earlier, the European Union stated that more than 21 million people in Afghanistan lack access to safe drinking water.
Afghanistan is among the countries that have been severely affected by the impacts of climate change and water scarcity. In recent years, the country has experienced repeated droughts and a decline in water resources.
Previously, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs said that the Islamic Emirate was making “serious and fundamental” efforts to address Kabul’s water crisis, including a plan to transfer water from the Panjshir River to the capital.
