Flood-affected families in desperate need of assistance

KABUL (SW) – The situation of flood-affected families in different provinces is dire, and they are in desperate need of assistance.

The devastating floods in recent days in the Marghab and Charsada districts of Ghor province, claimed life of one person and injured two others.

Over 500 families have also evacuated their homes due to these floods.

Officials at the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), however, claim ignorance regarding the flooding in Ghor. They told Salam Watandar that due to floods across 14 provinces in the country on the last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 15 lives were lost.

Mohammad Abdullah Jan Sayeq, spokesperson for ANDMA, reports that as a result of these floods, dozens of residential houses have been partially or completely destroyed, and over 2,000 livestock have perished.

He adds, “Due to the floods in 14 provinces such as Helmand, Maidan Wardak, Khost, Laghman, Ghor, Farah, Jowzjan, Takhar, Sar-e Pol, Badghis, Faryab, Kunduz, Herat, and Uruzgan, 15 lives have been lost, 140 houses have been destroyed, also 2,125 livestock have perished. Tens of thousands of jeribs of agricultural land have also been destroyed.”

Meanwhile, some residents of the affected provinces, whose homes and agricultural lands have been destroyed by these floods, complain that they have not received any assistance from the de-facto government.

Omid, a resident of Nimroz, says that the floods have destroyed over 2,000 jeribs of agricultural land in their village. He adds, “It has completely devastated our lands. In our village, out of 3,062 jeribs of land, less than 500 jeribs remain intact, the rest has been destroyed.”

Abdul Hadi, a resident of Farah city, which has suffered significant financial losses due to the recent floods, also says that they have not yet received any aid. “They [officials] occasionally say that they will come and assess.”

Nevertheless, officials at the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority report that they have distributed assistance to over 26,000 affected families since the beginning of the solar year.

According to ANDMA statistics, since then, over 100 people have lost their lives, and nearly 100 others have been injured due to floods in various provinces across the country.
