Increasing use of plastic dishes in Baghlan sparks health concerns, doctors warn

BAGHLAN (SW) – Residents of Pol-e-Khomri, the center of Baghlan, note a recent surge in the usage of plastic and disposable dishes in local restaurants and roadside establishments.

Local residents of Baghlan, express concern that restaurants serve food to customers in plastic and disposable dishes, which they believe that using these dishes poses health risks.

“We ask the people not to use single-use and plastic dishes. Whether at home, in the city or in the market, they should always use glass dishes,” a resident of Pol-e-Khomri, Mohammad Akbar said.

Despite concerns, some ice cream vendors, juice sellers, and restaurant owners in Pol-e-Khomri say that they prefer using glass dishes; however, they mention that citizens often prefer receiving their orders in plastic dishes.

“We buy plastic bottles from clubs that are clean,” says Nusratullah, a juice seller. “We consume 15 to 20 daily. Now it is winter, no one drinks juice because the weather is cold.”

Doctors in Baghlan urge residents to opt for glass and paper dishes instead of using plastic and disposable ones, emphasizing the health and environmental benefits of such choices.

“The use of plastic has very dangerous and negative effects on human health. People must avoid using plastic and disposable dishes,” says Rafi Aref, director of environmental health at the Baghlan Department of Public Health.

Doctors consistently caution that the use of plastic dishes, particularly for hot foods, is considered one of the factors contributing to the risk of cancer.
