Balkh’s famous Nine-Domed Mosque faced with destruction

MAZAR-E-SHARIF (SW) – The Nine-Domed Mosque in Balkh, which was known as the “Fire Temple of Nobahar” in the past, is now facing the danger of collapsing as an iron roof is its only shelter.

Meanwhile, a number of Balkh residents who have come to visit the mosque emphasize its historical value, protection and restoration.

Fayaz, a resident of Balkh who came to visit this historical place, says: “I saw this place that is collapsing, it affected us a lot. We ask the government to rebuild this place and not allow our historical and cultural heritage to be destroyed.”

Nangialay, another resident of Balkh, said: “Historical monuments must be restored so that domestic and foreign tourists come and this becomes a source of income for the government.”

Officials at the Balkh Information and Culture Department say that the reconstruction of this historical place is going to be done by the Aga Khan Foundation.

Zabihullah Aryai, the head of culture and art of the Balkh Department of Information and Culture, told Salam Watandar: “The reconstruction of the Mosque was carried out by the Aga Khan’s cultural office. This office has decided to build Herat’s historical monuments first and then start building this mosque.”

It should be mentioned that there are more than 120 historical places and monuments in Balkh, most of them are facing the danger of destruction.
