Lack of funds hindering development projects, says minister

KABUL (SW) – Officials of the Ministry of Urban Development and Lands say that this year, due to lack of budget, the ministry cannot implement a number of development projects.

Hamdullah Nomani, acting head of the Ministry of Urban Development and Lands, said during a press conference in Kabul today as part of the government’s accountability program to the nation, that this year’s development budget of the ministry will be spent on keeping its personnel and the implementation of a number of ongoing projects.

The development budget has not been taken into account.

He added that the construction works on nearly 550 projects of other ministries are related to the Ministry of Urban Development and Lands, and considering the development budget of this year, the implementation of these projects is impossible.

The caretaker government of the Islamic Emirate has approved the budget for the current fiscal year with very little development budget from domestic revenue.

According to the economic affairs expert Abdul Wasee Naibzay, the lack of development budget in the Ministry of Urban Development and Lands will affect the urban order and the economic situation of the people.

He also added that the lack of budget will prevent the creation of job opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Urban Development and Lands announced about urban plans, strategic plans and city development plans in major cities of the country.

The minister also said that the plan for the construction of 200,000 residential houses in the five zones of the country has been finalized and according to him, the work on the three major projects of New Kabul and townships funded by China and Qatar have started.
