Traders say sales remains low amid low purchasing power

KABUL (SW) – Days ahead of the Eid al-Adha, Kabul traders say the sales are drown and people’s purchasing power remains very low.

The bazaars in Kabul do not seem to have the excitement of the past years. A number of dried fruit sellers say that their sales have decreased significantly this year.

Yar Saeed, a seller in Kabul, said: “The market is weak compared to last year’s Eid. Year by year, the situation worsens, people are unable to afford it, our sales have decreased by 50% compared to last year.”

Asil Ahmad, another seller, said: “Years ago, when it was 10 or 15 days before Eid, people used to go shopping. This year, when Eid is two days away, people are not excited. Most of them come and see, but they don’t buy.”

This year, the citizens are going to welcome Eid as the country remains on the threshold of a major political and military transformation – a development that has had a strong impact on the country’s economic situation.

Residents of Kabul city say that due to the unstable economic situation, they cannot prepare for this year’s Eid, as in previous years.

Abdul Hamid Hakimi, one of the residents of Kabul, said: “People’s morale to celebrate Eid is too weak, the economy is weak and unemployment has reached its peak, people cannot celebrate Eid properly.”
