Karzai criticises face covering decree by the Islamic Emirate

KABUL (SW) – Former Afghan president Hamid Karzai has said in response to new restrictions imposed on female TV presenters by the Islamic Emirate that they should not follow the order to cover their faces.

In an interview with the CNN, he stressed that covering the face is not part of Afghan culture, but the tradition of other countries that have entered Afghanistan.

The former president added that Afghanistan is an Islamic country and women have always observed the hijab. He called on the Islamic Emirate to reconsider its decision.

Karzai also called the closure of girls’ schools above the sixth grade “unfortunate” and said the decision had “severely damaged Afghanistan.”

The local TOLO news privat announced earlier this week that the Islamic Emirate has issued a new order to all Moby group’s visual channels, including TOLO news, to cover all female presenters’ faces during television programs.

According to TOLO news, representatives of the Ministries of Enjoining the Good and Forbidding the Evil, and Information and Culture, when announcing the order to Moby Group, called it a “final verdict” and “indisputable”.

However, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, called for the observance of hijab on all women and told Salam Watandar that the order issued is without exception and that “all our sisters should abide by it; Because it is a religious matter”.
