World awaiting the US’ move on fate of the Islamic Emirate, Crocker

MONITORING (SW) – Former US Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ryan Crocker has said that any country that wants to recognize the Islamic Emirate of the Taliban in Afghanistan will be sanctioned by Washington.

In an interview, he said some countries are trying to recognize the Islamic Emirate, and handing over the Afghan embassies to it is part of the process.

Crocker said in a recent interview that some of Afghanistan’s neighbors and some countries in the region are keen to recognize Afghanistan’s new government, but they cannot do so for fear of the United States.

He added that the new Afghan government needed more efforts and steps to be recognized and that no country in the region would take such a step unless the United States recognized the government of the Islamic Emirate.

In response to a question, he said that if the countries of the region recognize the new government of Afghanistan without the consent of the United States, they may face sanctions.

The former US diplomat spoke about this matter as the Islamic Emirate continue to seek international recognition over six months since rising to power in Kabul.
