Pakistan fires mortar shells at Afghanistan’s Kunar province

ASSADABAD (SW) – Local sources in Kunar have confirmed that Pakistani forces have fired mortar shells at part of this province a day earlier.

Local sources in Kunar say Pakistani troops have launched the attack on the Sarkano district of the province in the afternoon. According to sources, the attacks continued until late tonight.

Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Sarkano district, told Salam Watandar that some rockets had hit people’s homes and that a number of families had fled to save their lives. He added, however, that it was not yet clear whether anyone had been injured in the attacks.

Local officials in Kunar also confirmed the Pakistani military’s rocket attacks on Sarkano district of the province. Najibullah Hanif, Kunar’s director of information and culture, said there was no immediate information on casualties or damage from the attacks.

Senior Islamic Emirate officials have not yet commented on the Pakistani military’s attacks.

Pakistani military rocket attacks on the Afghanistan’s remote districts near the disputed Durand Line are not unprecedented. Pakistan’s military has carried out rocket attacks on a number of Kunar districts over the years, resulting in more casualties in addition to financial losses.
