Flash floods warning issued to alert citizens

KABUL (SW) – Warning has been issued by the government to alert residents in a number of provinces in the wake of flash floods following heavy downpour.

The Ministry of Energy and Water of the Islamic Emirate announced on Tuesday in a statement that there is a possibility of floods and rising water levels in some marine areas. The ministry urged people to refrain from approaching the rivers.

According to the statement, as per the climate change and based on hydro-meteorological analyzes and forecasts of the Meteorological Department, the possibility of relatively heavy rains with flash floods and water table rise in the Kabul River, Harirod River, Marghab River and Helmand River is predicted.

According to the ministry, floods are likely to occur due to rainfall and rising water levels in Samangan, Balkh, Sar-e-Pul, Jawzjan, Faryab, Badghis, Ghor, Herat, Farah, Helmand, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Kabul and Panjshir provinces.

The Ministry of Energy and Water has asked residents of the provinces to refrain from approaching the rivers during floods. The ministry has also asked upstream residents to be alerted to floods or rising water levels to prevent casualties.
