17,000 new ID cards issued on daily basis

KABUL (SW) – At least 17,000 new biometric ID cards are being issued across the country on daily basis, said officials on Thursday.

Officials from the the National Statistics and Information Authority says that in the last five months alone, more than 759,000 new electronic ID cards have been distributed in 20 provinces of the country.

Faqir Mohammad Ziar, head of the NSIA, told a news conference that although the government was facing a shortage of equipment and funding, efforts to keep all ID distribution centers in Kabul and Provinces operational are ensured.

He added that many of the technical equipment of this office disappeared after the political changes in the country and the lack of equipment has caused the closing of the gates of the ID distribution centers in 14 provinces of the country.

Meanwhile, Hasibaullah Movahed, deputy director of the NSIA, acknowledged that the process of distributing ID cards had stopped in some provinces due to lack of financial resources and transportation problems. .

The NSIA also announced that about eight million e-IDs are ready to be distributed to applicants, adding that the procedure and mechanism for changing IDs is ongoing and that the form and content of IDs may change.
