Taliban enter Farah after fierce clashes

HERAT CITY (SW) – The Taliban claimed to have captured many parts of Farah city after which scores of the inmates fled as the insurgents overrun the prison.

Farah provincial council officials told Salam Watandar the Taliban have taken control of most parts of Farah city by carrying out large-scale attacks on various parts of the provincial capital.

Khair Mohammad Noorzai, deputy head of Farah provincial council, told Salam Watandar that since last evening, the Taliban have been active in the Sheikhabad, Chaharbagh, Bagh-e-Pol, Sang-e-Zour and Haidar Quli areas in the north and west of Farah city.

According to him, the Taliban took control of the police headquarters, prison, provincial headquarters and other parts of Farah city after suffering heavy casualties this afternoon.

The deputy head of Farah provincial council added that security forces are now present in the provincial NDS compound and the war is continuing fiercely. He said reports indicate that all inmates escaped after the Taliban seized control of Farah prison.

Noorzai further said that if additional troops are not sent, there is a possibility of a complete collapse of the province.

Images posted on social media also showed that the Taliban have taken control of most parts of Farah city.

Although, Farah security officials did not comment on the fall of Farah city, but police spokesman Farooq Hazrati told Salam Watandar this morning that the Taliban had attacked Farah city from several parts last night and met with resistance from security forces.

About two months ago, the Taliban were able to seize all of Farah’s districts.
