Cases of human trafficking on the rise

KABUL (SW) – The justice ministry has noted a notable surge in cases of trafficking of migrants from Afghanistan with the ensuing violence across the country.

Justice minister Fazl Ahmad Manawi told a news conference in Kabul today that human trafficking in the country exists at various levels, but that there is a serious political will to counter the issues of human trafficking and “bacha bazi” in the country.

He said that if human trafficking in the country is not countered, the US and other international aid to Afghanistan may be reduced and Afghanistan will face sanctions. According to him, the fight against human trafficking requires collective struggle and awareness because a number of families unknowingly hand over their children to human traffickers.

Fazl Ahmad Manavi also said in this meeting that there are people who lure children under the name of religious education, but they are given terrorism training. Manawai also acknowledged child abuse was also seen in schools and in the ranks of the security forces, but said there are no exact statistics.

A while back the US State Department said in a report that the rate of human trafficking in the world has increased due to the coronavirus epidemic. According to the report, Afghanistan is among the worst countries in terms of human trafficking.
