UNAMA demands Taliban to provide answers for compound attack

KABUL (SW) – The UN in Afghanistan on Sunday demanded the Taliban to provide answers to Friday’s deadly assault on its compound in western Herat province bordering Iran.

In a statement, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan called upon the Taliban to undertake a full investigation and provide answers concerning the attack Friday on the UN’s main compound. It demanded the perpetrators for the attack that killed an Afghan guard need to be held accountable.

“The UN as a civilian entity in #Afghanistan –focused on supporting peace efforts, promoting the rights of all Afghans and providing critical humanitarian assistance to millions of Afghans– needs to be able to carry out its work without threats or violence”, it said.

The UN stated it has communicated its grave and mounting concerns given the further violent occurrences at the #Herat base on Saturday, as well as other recent incidents involving UN personnel and assets elsewhere in #Afghanistan.

On Friday, UNAMA condemned in the ‘strongest terms’ the attack on its main compound in Herat that resulted in the loss of life of an Afghan police guard and injuries to other officers.

It said the attack targeting entrances of the clearly marked United Nations facility was carried out by Anti-Government Elements.

Local officials in the province told Salam Watandar that five security forces got killed and 21 others got injured in the Taliban assaults in Herat. According to the head of the regional public hospital, Arif Jalali, among the injured include three civilians and 18 security forces with bullet-wounds.
