Taliban agree to truce in Badghes, says governor

QALA-E-NAU (SW) – A truce for unlimited period of time has been reached between the security forces and the Taliban in Badghes province.

Provincial governor Hasamuddin Shams told Salam Watandar the ceasefire has been brokered with the help of local elders.

He said that a group of ten local elders first reached an understanding over it with the Taliban and later shared their views with the government to reach the truce.

According to him, the cease-fire is unlimited, and the Taliban have come to understand with these elders that they would leave the provincial capital Qala-e-Nau.

The Badghis governor said the local elders would monitor the truce, and anyone found violating it would face repercussions. He also asked the displaced locals to return home. Hoping for the truce to stay entact, he said heavy financial and human losses could be prevented with the ceasefire.

Shams said the Taliban staged at least five group assaults on Qala-e-Nau, but were pushed back in the past one week.

The Taliban have not commented on it.
