Taliban stage second attack on Qala-i-Naw

QALA-I-NAW (SW) – The Taliban attacked Qala-i-Naw city of Badghes province for the second time on Thursday after entering it a day earlier.

Badghis Governor Hussamuddin Shams has said that the Taliban had attacked Qala-e-Naw, the capital of the province, from several directions with light and heavy weapons this afternoon. According to him, the Taliban even infiltrated Qala-e-Naw from the southeast side of Badghis, where security and defense forces and special forces arrived on time, and the Taliban are now fleeing.

The governor of Badghis assured the people of the province that the security and defense forces will drive the Taliban out of Qala-e-Naw, as they did yesterday. He added that the Taliban had suffered heavy casualties as a result of the clashes.

Meanwhile, Abdul Aziz Beyk, chairman of the Badghis Provincial Council, told Salam Watandar that clashes between security forces and the Taliban had been dominated by airstrikes yesterday evening, but since Thursday morning, the clashes have intensified once again in two parts of the city of Qala-e-Naw. He added that although air support had been provided in the province, but the reinforcements have not yet reached Badghis.

He said the Qala-e-Naw security belt has been broken and people are still in a state of panic. He emphasized that the city of Qala-e-Naw is closed and most of the residents of this city have taken refuge in the villages around the city to save their lives.

The head of Badghis Provincial Council added that as a result of yesterday’s clashes, some tumber shops were set on fire, but no civilian casualties have been reported so far.
