Key intra-Afghan peace talks begin in Doha

MONITORING (SW) – An important round of intra-Afghan peace talks began in Doha with the senior figures from the Afghan government and the Taliban participating.

Fereydoon Khwazoon, spokesman for the High Council for National Reconciliation, said that the opening ceremony of the talks was held in the morning and that talks were now under way in groups.

The spokesman added that the Afghan government hopes that in this round of talks, key issues will be discussed so that the country can reach a political agreement.

In his opening remarks, the Taliban’s deputy head Mulla Abdul Ghani Baradar stressed peace and prosperity would prevail in Afghanistan with the ‘a strong, centralized and independent Islamic system’.

Following the escalation of Taliban attacks in a number of provinces and continuing clashes between security forces and militants of the group, a high-level delegation of the Afghan government headed by Abdullah left for Doha yesterday to meet with Taliban representatives.
