UNAMA chief meets Taliban peace negotiators in Doha

KABUL (SW) – Chief of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan Deborah Lyons has met the Taliban representatives for the intra-Afghan peace negotiations in the Qatari capital, Doha.

In a statement, the UNAMA said Deborah Lyons met the Taliban negotiating team in Doha to discuss UN support to peace in Afghanistan. “Peace negotiations should be genuine and prioritized as the only way to end the conflict and bring hope to the Afghan people”, the UNAMA tweeted.

It has been over a year since the US and Taliban inked the landmark Doha Agreement after months of intense negotiations.

Reduction in violence and bringing peace to Afghanistan were one of the goals of this agreement. But, contrary to the expectations of the people, at the beginning of the talks between the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the representatives of the Taliban in Qatar, the citizens of the country witnessed increased insecurity, assassinations and targeted killings and destabilization in the politics and economy of the country.
