Mortars hit residential area in Kunar, 5 people injured

ASSADABAD (SW) – At least five people got hurt and property worth millions damaged as four mortars hit residential areas in Kunar province.

Officials in Kunar said four mortar shells were fired at Asadabad, the provincial capital, this morning. One of the mortars hit a civilian hospital in Kunar and three other mortar shells hit near people’s homes.



Mohammad Iqbal Saeed, the governor of Kunar, said five people had been injured. The Kunar governor added that the Taliban have been defeated on the battlefield and now wanted to damage public facilities and private property.

He emphasized that these mortars were fired by the Taliban insurgents.

The Interior Ministry has also blamed the Taliban for firing these mortars on civilians.

The Taliban, however, have not yet commented.



Meanwhile, Aziz-ur-Rehman Safi, Kunar’s director of health, told Salam Watandar that a mortar had struck the vaccine storage facility of the hospital in the province, damaging stocks.

According to the director health, the hospital has sustained losses worth around 10 million afghanis due to this incident.
