Ombudsperson Ghizaal Haress resigns

KABUL (SW) – The Ombudsperson Ghizaal Haress has resigned from her post without stating reasons for the sudden departure on Sunday.

In a series of tweets, Ghizaal expressed hope for a unified vision for fighting corruption in Afghanistan in the near future. “I had the privilege of working with the most dedicated and highly talented Afghans who not only fought corruption in the most difficult times and circumstances; but were also a source of knowledge and inspiration to me on a daily basis”, she tweeted.

The former Ombudsperson further said that after nearly two years of serving as this post, and after handing in her resignation twice to the presidency, which was not approved, she was stepping down from this position.

She was introduced at this post two years ago at the directives of President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. By order of the President, her office was tasked with reviewing complaints and reports on how to manage and use resources to combat the spread of the coronavirus fairly.

Her findings confirmed the widespread corruption, especially in the procurement process of the budget allocated to the fight against COVID-19.
