Bamyan’s head of health directorate arrested over corruption charges

BAMYAN (SW) – Officials in Bamyan have confirmed the arrest of head of health directorate Seyed Ali Agha Ayub Naseri on corruption charges.

Atiqullah Atiq, Bamyan’s deputy governor, confirmed that Naseri was arrested on Wednesday on charges of corruption, abuse of office and embezzlement. Atiq did not provide details about the amount of money embezzled by the head of Bamyan’s health department.

The local civil society activists also accuse the provincial health chief of corruption, inciting ethnic prejudice, embezzlement and abuse of office.

Ismail Zaki, coordinator of the Bamyan Civil Society and Human Rights Network, said that security, justice and judicial institutions should thoroughly investigate corruption cases, especially embezzlement cases and abuse of power in the province’s health department.

Civil society activists in Bamyan are urging officials to refrain from using pressure and mediation in connection with Naseri’s case.

Although officials at the Bamyan prosecutor’s office have not commented on the corruption case against the provincial health director, they confirmed that they have dealt with a number of corruption cases in this connection.
