Carnage in Kabul; casualty toll surges beyond 50

KABUL (SW) – The interior ministry officials on Sunday confirmed the casualty toll from Saturday’s deadly assault on a school in Kabul has risen to more than 50 dead and over 100 injured.

Tariq Arian, the ministry spokesman, said the victims included students of the school and residents from nearby. According to Arian, most of the martyrs were students.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Interior added that the figures were not final and that there was a possibility of an increase. He said the process of transporting the dead and wounded has been going on since late last night. He emphasized that the attack was carried out by the Taliban.

The Taliban, however, denied the attack and condemned it.

Arian added that the incident took place when a car bomb was detonated, and later two improvised explosive devices were detonated in the area. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a police recruiting center, killing two policemen and wounding three others, police sources said.

The attack was widely condemned by local and international figures and institutions.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the peace council chairman, Abdullah Abdullah and former president Hamid Karzai denounced this brazen assault.

The United Nations, NATO, the European Union, the US State Department, the British Embassy in Kabul, UNICEF and a number of other diplomatic figures and institutions in Kabul also condemned the attack.
