16 injured as mortars hit a religious gathering in Kunar

HERAT CITY (SW) – At least 16 people got injured when mortars hit a religious gathering in Kunar province on Monday, officials confirmed.

Accorging to the provincial authorities, a Holy Quran reciting conference was underway in the provincial administration compound when mortars hit the venue. The conference was sponsored by the Presidential Palace and was organized by the Ministry of Haj and Religious Affairs on a regional level in Kunar.

Kunar governor Mohammad Iqbal Saeed said the rockets were fired by the Taliban insurgents. He confirmed 13 young participants of the Holy Quran reciting conference and three administrators are among the injured.

The head of public hospital in Kunar, Attaullah Safi has described the state of three injured people as critical.

The Taliban have not commented on this incident.
