JALALABAD  (SW) – Unknown assailants on Tuesday killed three members of polio vaccination team in Jalalabad.

A well-placed source said the killings took place before noon at two different locations in the provincial capital of Nangarhar province.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Spokesman for the Nangarhar governor Attaullah Khogyani has confirmed the incident.

The deadly assault came on the second day of nationwide polio vaccination drive.

Globally, Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two remaining polio endemic countries in the world, according to the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund. It has stated 16 out of 34 provinces in Afghanistan have been infected with 56 cases of world polio virus type 1 (WPV1) while the virus’ circulation remains high in the southern region, which has contributed to 66 per cent of the total national cases in 2020.
