The United Nations in Afghanistan (UN Afghanistan) says it has supported 18,616 women entrepreneurs across the country.
In a post on X on Monday (April 20), the organization said that support for women has strengthened their participation in economic activities, particularly through micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan said women make up 21% of the workforce engaged in small businesses in the country. The agency emphasized the need to address challenges facing women’s economic participation.
UNDP had previously reported that it supported 89,000 small businesses in Afghanistan over the past year, 91% of which are led by women.
It has been more than four years since a number of women and girls deprived of education turned to starting small businesses, seeking to meet their own needs and those of their families.
