FIROZKOH CITY (SW) – Hundreds of families displaced by floods in Marghab district of Ghor province have set up makeshift camps in Pusht-e Gamurak, a place designated by the de-facto government to accommodate 1,000 affected families. They are facing severe shortages of shelter, water, food, and are vulnerable to disease outbreaks.
Abdul Khaliq, one of the displaced residents in Jandak village, describes how the floods have destroyed their homes, farms, and forced them into displacement to protect their lives and those of their children.
“We have no attention paid to us,” he laments, referring to the lack of support from authorities and relief agencies. “There is nothing to eat and drink; if this continues, we may face a humanitarian catastrophe soon.”
Others like Gul Aqa Waqar and Abdul Jabar Mohammadi echo similar grievances about the dire conditions in the camps, highlighting the lack of basic amenities and pleading for immediate government intervention and aid agency support.
Local officials in Ghor acknowledge the challenges faced by the displaced and assure that temporary shelters and food supplies have been distributed across the province. Efforts are underway to construct residential homes in the newly established camps and address the ongoing needs of the displaced population.
Abdul Wakil Moradian, head of natural disaster management in Ghor, confirms ongoing relief efforts and plans to rebuild homes for eligible individuals in the next three months.
“Fortunately, across all districts of Ghor, those who lost their homes have been provided temporary shelter. Initial aid, including food supplies, has been distributed by the management and relief organizations, and assistance continues. The planned settlement is operational, and over the next three months, homes will be reconstructed and distributed to eligible individuals. Support efforts are ongoing,” he assured.
The recently inaugurated 1,000-house settlement for flood victims in Ghor, along with promises to build 200 more residential units, aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the floods and works are undergoing, according to local authorities.
