Floods in Ghor lead to water contamination, surge in diseases

FIROZKOH CITY (SW) – In the aftermath of recent devastating floods, residents of the Marghab and Charsada districts of Ghor province are facing severe water contamination and a surge in illnesses, particularly diarrhea, affecting many children.

Rahimullah Hadafmand, a resident of Marghab district, says that the contamination of springs, wells, and the Marghab River has caused the spread of diarrhea. He explains, “This water causes diarrhea in children, nausea, and ultimately kidney diseases. Serious illnesses have emerged, and there are people who need urgent medical evacuation.”

Mir Agha Mosleh, deputy head of Marghab district, also confirms that after the contamination of the Marghab River due to the floods, cases of diarrhea have increased.

“There is no access to clean drinking water. The number of children suffering from diarrhea has risen significantly. We hope attention will be given to prevent a catastrophe,” he added.

The situation highlights the urgent need for clean water and medical attention in the flood-affected areas of the country to prevent further health crises.

Medical professionals in these districts report a significant increase in the number of diarrhea patients, mostly children, seeking treatment daily.

Gul Ahmad, a physician and head of the Jandak Marghab Health Center, highlights the situation: “The number of diarrhea and vomiting cases has increased by 50 to 80 percent since the floods. Previously, we had about five cases; now it has risen to around 10, including elderly patients. Some of our patients are in critical condition.”

Abdul Satar Mowafaq, head of Public Health Directorate in Ghor, announces ongoing efforts to provide medical services to remote areas of the province.

He says, “The first teams we dispatched were public health teams sent to both districts. The only issue that has notably increased recently is diarrhea due to water contamination. Fortunately, with the effective management by our colleagues in the area, the number of cases has decreased.”

The recent floods swept through several districts of Ghor province, leaving thousands of homes destroyed and displacing countless individuals.

Officials in Ghor report that in these floods, more than 50 lives, mostly children, have been lost, with dozens more still missing.
