KABUL (SW) – In a press conference held on Tuesday in Kabul, officials from the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) reported that recent floods in Afghanistan over the past 11 days have resulted in 294 deaths and 266 injuries.
Mohammad Abdullah Jan Sayeq, the ministry’s spokesperson, stated that the floods have caused the most damage in the provinces of Baghlan, Ghor, Takhar, Faryab, Badakhshan, Samangan, Badghis, Bamyan, and Kapisa.
He said, “The recent floods have resulted in 294 deaths and 266 injuries; additionally, 14,923 homes have been completely or partially destroyed, and 6,655 livestock have perished.”
Sayeq attributed the devastating floods to climate change and called on the international community to support Afghanistan and assist the recent flood victims.
He also mentioned that 20 million Afghanis have been distributed to flood victims in several provinces.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan issued a statement urging the global community to provide immediate support to help Afghanistan combat climate change.
The statement emphasized, “We call on the international community to assist Afghanistan in preparing for climate change. The flash floods last week have increased the country’s vulnerability.”
Afghanistan is ranked as the sixth most affected country by climate change.
The National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) previously announced that Afghanistan needs $22 billion to address and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change.
