WFP highlights urgency in addressing Afghanistan’s humanitarian crises

KABUL (SW) – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan stated that it is crucial to make sure that Afghanistan is not forgotten at a time when crises are engulfing the rest of the world.

In 2024 and facing the massive cuts that had in 2023, WFP said that this agency needs to continue to make sure the most vulnerable are reached with the most appropriate assistance in a timely and safe manner at the same time.

Wrote in X on Saturday, WFP said that after a funding shortfall forced them to cut 10 million people from food assistance last year, Afghan women bore the brunt.

“We know that the women and girls are going to be of utmost importance, as they will have some of the most acute needs, either emergency and non-emergency needs going forward, we need to make sure that Afghanistan is not forgotten in a time where crises are engulfing the rest of the world,” said Samir Wanmali, WFP’s Deputy Regional Director for Asia and Pacific.

“It is absolutely critical that we stay with the people of Afghanistan and we make sure that we are part of the solution for moving away from emergencies to a most sustainable future for men, women, girls and boys of this country,” he added.

Previously, WFP announced that this agency needs 760 million dollars to continue its cooperation in Afghanistan in the next six months.
