UN team visits Kabul to assess UNAMA’s activities, analysts say it “failed” in core duties

KABUL (SW) – A delegation from the United Nations’ Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ) has arrived in Kabul.

The purpose of their visit is to assess the operations of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate announced that on Tuesday, Amir Khan Muttaqi, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with the UN’s ACABQ delegation in Kabul city.

During the session, discussions were held regarding Afghanistan’s representation at the United Nations, the effectiveness of humanitarian assistance, and support for development projects in Afghanistan.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was emphasized that “aid should be utilized in a manner that promotes employment opportunities for the people, fosters domestic production and industry growth, and enables the United Nations to meet its needs from Afghan markets to support Afghanistan’s private sector.”

However, political analysts suggest that fostering global cooperation with Afghanistan and its regional impact, supporting human rights, and ensuring everyone’s access to healthcare and education are among UNAMA’s fundamental responsibilities.

Mirwais Ashufta, a political analyst, said, “UNAMA’s mission includes promoting and supporting human rights, and providing job and education opportunities for women, but these tasks have not yet been fulfilled.”

According to analysts, in recent years, UNAMA has failed to fulfill its core duties in a better manner.

Another political expert, Sayed Moqadam Amin, mentioned that currently, UNAMA primarily serves as an analytical body in Afghanistan.

He added, “UNAMA has been unsuccessful in fulfilling its primary responsibilities, and the coordination of humanitarian aid is not always carried out effectively, sometimes lacking cooperation with the Islamic Emirate.”
