Logar residents ask for an increase in number of midwives

POL-E ALAM CITY (SW) – A number of residents of the center and distant districts of Logar province located in the eastern part of Afghanistan, expressing happiness, say that due to the timely provision of medical services by midwives to mothers, the death rate of mothers and infants has decreased in this province.

They ask the Islamic Emirate and other international institutions to increase the number of midwives and health centers also promote medical services, especially in distant areas of Logar.

Shayesta, a resident of Pol-e Alam city of Logar, says that the provision of medical services to pregnant mothers in the health centers of this province has improved compared to the past.

“Because of the midwives’ activities, women’s health problems have reduced. Now, in many districts, women have access to midwives; however, this accessibility is limited, and should be promoted also more health centers must be established,” she said.

Sadaf Salih, another resident of Logar, also says, “The activity of midwives is important for women. 50% of people in society are women, and these women do not see male doctors for the treatment of their diseases due to restrictions and culture.”

Meanwhile, Sayeda Hashemi, a midwife in Logar, says that in addition to an increase in the level of visits by patients, their trust in midwives has also increased.

She adds: “In remote areas, the number of midwives is low, and people, especially patients, should cooperate with midwives in this field because midwives leave their homes and lives and work to provide medical services to patients.”

Ms. Hashemi emphasizes that although the midwives are facing problems such as low income and work pressure, they provide timely medical services to the residents of this province.

Logar’s Public Health Directorate officials say that more than 100 midwives are currently working in the health centers of this province.

Sayed Rahman Qaderi, the head of LPHD, says that in cooperation with international organizations, the Ministry of Public Health is trying to increase the number of midwives in Logar province.

“We are trying to address this issue,” Qaderi said.

The Ministry of Public Health repeatedly announced that the provision of medical services in Afghanistan has improved compared to the past, and this ministry is trying to provide citizens with equal access to medical services.
