Communication road breakdown in Atghar district creates mounting difficulties for Zabul locals

ZABUL (SW) – A number of residents of the Atghar district in Zabul report a significant increase in travel time due to the breakdown of the communication road from Qalat city, the provincial capital, what was once a three-hour journey has now extended to a staggering 24 hours, according to the resident.

They add that the deteriorating condition of the road has dire consequences, with critically ill patients succumbing to their illnesses before reaching Qalat city. Additionally, residents are grappling with food shortages, particularly during the winter months.

Ghani, a resident of the Atghar district, says: “We are in a lot of trouble, the situation of the road is very bad. The journey is three hours but we reach the city of Qalat in 24 hours.”

“When it rains, neither patients nor the wounded can reach the city of Qalat, Said Gholam-Nabi, another resident of Atghar district. “Sometimes the residents of this district face a shortage of food that we cannot bring from Kandahar or Qalat.”

Meanwhile, the local officials of Zabul say that in addition to the Atghar district, the roads of three other districts of this province will be fundamentally reconstructed by the next solar year.

Ahmad Ahmadi, the director of Public Works of Zabul, says that they are making efforts to get approval for the construction of the highway that connects Qalat city to the hypothetical Durand Line and start its construction in the spring.

“We are planning to pave the Shamulzayi, Naw-Bahar, and Shinkay districts in a basic way,” he said.
