Salang tunnel reopens: Enhancing connectivity post-reconstruction

KABUL (SW) – The Salang tunnel, a vital highway in Afghanistan connecting Kabul to numerous northern provinces, has reopened for traffic on Wednesday.

Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Economic Deputy of the Ministry of the Islamic Emirate, stated during the reopening ceremony of the Salang tunnel that its reconstruction will enhance facilities for the transportation of commercial goods, benefiting merchants.

He adds: “The reconstruction of the Salang tunnel will provide more facilities for the merchants of the country to transfer their commercial goods, and the talks about the reconstruction of the second Salang tunnel are also going on.”

The reconstruction of the Salang tunnel commenced on September 10, leading to the temporary closure of the tunnel for both passenger and cargo vehicle traffic.

The Salang highway, linking nine northern and northeastern provinces as well as four commercial ports in Afghanistan, stands as a crucial route for the transit of commercial goods between South Asia and Central Asia.
